Jesminda's friends call her Jess or Jessie. She is playing soccer with some of her friends when Jules first sees her. Joe, the coach is English. Jess's mum is angry when she sees Jess playing football, she forbids her from playing because of the clothes she was wearing. Also she makes her stay inside and learn 'how to be a woman'. She tricks her parents and goes to soccer anyway by saying she is going out with her friend or by saying that she is going shopping. Her sister, Pinkey is about to be married. Pinkey is also hiding somthing from her parents, she is cheating on her future husband with another man. When Jess gets some money from her mother to get dress shoes, she instead gets soccer shoes and covers it up by borrowing dress shoes from a friend.
